History

LU*Palooza is an all-day music festival thrown by Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. The original LUPalooza all-day music festival was a historic event held at Lindenwood University on April 20, 1999. The first LUPalooza took place on the gazebo in Heritage Campus, a central location in LU’s quad and a central social gathering spot for students on campus. The festival exemplified the conflict of campus life and the "Spellman Era."

LUPalooza was assembled through the joint work of Alpha Sigma Phi Fraternity and Delta Zeta Sorority. Members Christopher Kyle of Alpha Sigma Phi and Amy Miller of Delta Zeta created and spearheaded the event. These representatives from the two Greek originations were planning for the upcoming Greek Week and the campus’ annual Spring Fling, a week-long campus celebration for the coming of spring. The idea for LUPalooza was the result of their desire to make Greek life on campus widely known, to bring everyone together, and prove to them that LU wasn’t all that bad.

“We needed an event that would stick out from the others and be long remembered.” –C. Kyle.

Ten of the best-known campus musicians and groups appeared during that day and night. The field was full, filled with an mass of students and filled with the energy of people enjoying the music, barbequing, and tossing Frisbees and footballs. The event accomplished everything it set out to, even exceeding expectations. LUPalooza was a huge success, and continued on for the next two years, although Alpha Sigma took on the full sponsorship of the event due to the many restrictions and rules of the Delta Zeta organization. Despite this, a few key Delta Zeta members still helped run the event. The event became a well known and much anticipated campus event that was the highlight of every coming Spring.

In 2002, Lindenwood administration put a stop to the event. Although attempts were made over the next 5 years to recreate the festival, the original event has proven to be unique and legendary. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest moments on Lindenwood campus.

In the fall of 2006, the idea to resurrect LU*Palooza came to the table at one of the fraternity meetings. It was decided that it had been long enough since the last LU*Palooza, and it was time to bring it back. They were able to convince the administration (at the time, it was immediately after the death of President Spellmann, a brother of Alpha Sigma Phi) to allow the return of the show. The Spring 2007 LU*Palooza, aptly named "The Resurrection", was kept low-key, and was financed and organized entirely by the fraternity. Despite its low budget and lineup of mostly local bands(with the exception of It's Like Love, who made the drive from Arizona), it was a successful endeavor and brought many students out of the solitude of their dorm rooms to enjoy a day of music and good times.

Having seen the appeal of the music festival, and the effect of a good event on the student body, Lindenwood Administration decided to not only allow for the return of LU*Palooza, but to co-sponsor it as an official Lindenwood event. New student activities director Kerry Cox took the reigns on getting the concert going, and is as excited about this event as we are. Last year, because of the increase in size and scope of the event, it was set to be moved from the smaller "Heritage" part of campus(on the gazebo in the quad), to Hunter Stadium, on the football field. A last-minute turn for the worse in weather forced the show into the Hyland Performance Arena, which proved to be a perfect atmosphere for a rock show.

This year, LU*Palooza returns to the Hyland Arena for what we plan to be the best LU*Palooza ever.
